Quick answer
Ryzen or EPYC: which dedicated server CPU should I choose?
Which dedicated server CPU to choose depends on the work. Choose Ryzen for the highest single-core speed at a low price. Choose EPYC on the SP3 or SP5 socket for many cores, 8 or 12 memory channels and 128 PCIe lanes. A Ryzen 9 9950X boosts to 5.7 GHz on 2 channels; an EPYC 9555 has 64 cores and 12 channels. Ironatoll lists every plan's CPU, from $63.68, no KYC, paid in crypto.
How do Ryzen and EPYC differ, in short?
| Ryzen 9000 | AMD's desktop line on socket AM5: up to 16 cores, 2 DDR5 channels, 28 PCIe 5.0 lanes (24 usable) |
|---|---|
| EPYC 4005 | AMD's server line on the same AM5 socket: up to 16 cores, 2 DDR5 channels, 28 PCIe 5.0 lanes, ECC memory |
| EPYC 9005 | AMD's server line on socket SP5: up to 192 cores, 12 DDR5 channels, 128 PCIe 5.0 lanes (160 with two sockets), ECC memory |
| ECC on Ryzen | Ryzen 9 9950X: "Yes (Requires mobo support)", in AMD's words |

What is the difference between Ryzen and EPYC?
Ryzen is AMD's desktop processor line; EPYC is its server line. In the same generation they use the same Zen cores. What differs is around the cores: memory channels, PCIe lanes, sockets per board and server validation.
The brand name alone does not tell you the class. The EPYC 4005 series sits on AM5, the same socket as Ryzen 9000, with the same 2 memory channels. The large EPYC chips use socket SP3 or SP5, with 8 or 12 channels.
Ryzen against EPYC is really a choice of socket: AM5 gives 2 memory channels and 28 PCIe lanes, SP5 gives 12 channels and 128 lanes.
How do Ryzen and EPYC compare, spec by spec?
Four real models, from AMD's product pages read on 30 October 2026: one desktop chip, one AM5 server chip and two socket-SP server chips.

ECC "series": listed for the whole series in AMD's EPYC selection guide (May 2025). AMD lists no bandwidth figure for the 9950X.
How many cores do Ryzen and EPYC have?
Ryzen 9000 tops out at 16 cores; EPYC goes up to 192. The 9950X and the 4545P have 16 cores each, the EPYC 9555 has 64 and the EPYC 9965 has 192.
More cores run more work in parallel: virtual machines, builds, many users at once. They do not make a single thread faster.
Which is faster per core, Ryzen or EPYC?
Ryzen and the AM5 EPYC chips are faster per core, because they run at higher clocks. AMD defines max boost as the highest frequency a single core reaches on a bursty single-threaded load.
For one thread, clock speed wins: a 16-core Ryzen 9 9950X boosts to 5.7 GHz, 2 GHz above the 192-core EPYC 9965.
Base clocks show the same gap: 4.3 GHz on the 9950X against 2.25 GHz on the EPYC 9965. Age matters too. The EPYC 7443P uses Zen 3 cores from 2021, which do less work per clock than Zen 5.
Does Ryzen support ECC memory?
Yes, with conditions. AMD lists ECC support on the Ryzen 9 9950X as "Yes (Requires mobo support)". Every EPYC series in AMD's selection guide lists ECC memory, including the AM5-based EPYC 4005.
ECC memory corrects single-bit errors and reports larger ones. It matters for databases, ZFS storage and long-running nodes.
On a rented Ryzen server, ECC depends on the motherboard and the memory the host fitted. Ask support before you order if your workload needs it.
Why do memory channels and PCIe lanes matter on a server?
Memory channels set how fast the processor can read RAM. PCIe lanes set how many fast drives and network cards run at full speed.
Bandwidth is channels times transfer rate times 8 bytes. Two channels of DDR5-5600 give 89.6 GB/s, the figure AMD lists for the EPYC 4545P.
By AMD's figures, an EPYC 9555 has 614 GB/s of memory bandwidth per socket: almost 7 times the 89.6 GB/s of the two-channel EPYC 4545P.
That gap decides CPU inference of language models, which reads the model's weights from RAM for every token. See can I run an LLM on a dedicated server without a GPU.
Capacity follows the same split: AMD lists up to 256 GB for the 9950X, against up to 6 TB for the EPYC 9005 series.
Lanes limit drives: an NVMe SSD usually takes 4 lanes, so 24 usable lanes fill quickly, while 128 feed many drives at once.
Which workloads favour Ryzen, and which favour EPYC?
Fast-clocked AM5 chips suit work that waits on one thread. Large EPYC chips suit work that needs many cores, much RAM or many drives.
| Workload | Better fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Game servers | Ryzen or EPYC 4005 | One main thread sets the tick rate, so clock speed matters most |
| Many virtual machines | EPYC on SP3 or SP5 | More cores and far more RAM per machine |
| LLM inference on CPU | EPYC on SP5 | 12 memory channels feed the weights faster |
| Databases and ZFS storage | EPYC | ECC memory, RAM capacity and lanes for many NVMe drives |
| Blockchain full nodes | Either | Disk size and speed matter more; ECC helps a node that runs for months |
Is an older EPYC or Ryzen still worth renting?
An older CPU is worth renting only at a price that reflects its age. Some cheap offers run on old chips.
According to Ironatoll's check of 30 October 2026, the cheapest dedicated server of 27 of 34 bare-metal sellers ran on a CPU launched before 2018.
Check the launch date on the maker's page before you compare prices. The EPYC 7443P from 2021 still has 8 channels, but its DDR4 and Zen 3 cores trail the 2024 chips.
Which CPU does each Ironatoll plan use?
Every Ironatoll plan names its exact CPU model. Look it up on its maker's page to check cores, clocks, memory channels and ECC support. Prices and stock are on how much does an Ironatoll dedicated server cost.
| Plan | CPU | Cores | RAM | Price per 30 days |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Atoll 16 | Intel Xeon E-2236 | 6 cores / 12 threads | 16 GB | $63.68 |
| Atoll 32 | AMD Ryzen 5 5600 | 6 cores / 12 threads | 32 GB | $72.15 |
| Atoll 64 | Intel Xeon E-2288G | 8 cores / 16 threads | 64 GB | $72.62 |
| Atoll 128 | AMD Ryzen 9 7950X | 16 cores / 32 threads | 128 GB | $205.27 |
| Atoll 256 | AMD EPYC 7443P | 24 cores / 48 threads | 256 GB | $406.37 |
Ryzen vs EPYC dedicated servers: FAQ
Is Ryzen good for a dedicated server?
Yes, for high per-core speed at a low price. Its limits are 2 memory channels, 28 PCIe lanes and ECC that depends on the motherboard.
What is the difference between EPYC 4005 and Ryzen 9000?
Both use socket AM5, up to 16 Zen 5 cores, 2 DDR5 channels and 28 PCIe 5.0 lanes. EPYC 4005 is sold for servers with ECC memory listed, and the 4545P runs at 65 W against 170 W for the 9950X.
Is EPYC better for virtualization?
Socket SP3 and SP5 EPYC chips are, because they hold more cores and far more RAM in one machine. An AM5 chip still runs a handful of virtual machines well.
Can I choose the CPU when I rent from Ironatoll?
You choose a plan, and each plan comes with a named CPU model. The five plans and their CPUs are on the pricing page.
