What changes when you rent a whole machine instead of a slice of one: CPU, neighbours, memory, disks, setup time and price, and who needs which.

**Quick answer — Dedicated server or VPS: which one do I need?**

Which one you need depends on your load. Choose a dedicated server when you need a whole machine: every CPU core, all the RAM and every disk, with no neighbours. Choose a VPS when a share of a server is enough and you want it in minutes, for less. **Ironatoll** rents offshore dedicated servers from $63.68 per 30 days. No KYC: no ID, no documents. Pay in crypto.

## How do a dedicated server and a VPS compare at a glance?

Dedicated-server figures are Ironatoll's own plans and its price check of 30 October 2026.

| Point | Dedicated server | VPS |
| --- | --- | --- |
| What you rent | A whole physical machine | A virtual machine on a physical server shared with other customers |
| CPU | Every core is yours | Virtual CPUs scheduled on cores that other guests also use, unless the plan reserves cores |
| Noisy neighbours | None on the machine | Other customers' load can slow your CPU, disk and network |
| RAM | All the installed memory | A fixed share set by the hypervisor |
| Disks | Physical disks for you alone, often two in RAID 1 | A virtual disk on shared storage |
| Kernel and virtualization | Your own kernel; run Proxmox VE and your own virtual machines | Your kernel inside the host's virtual machine; your own hypervisor depends on the host |
| Setup time | Often hours to days. Ironatoll: A person on our team gets your server ready once your payment is confirmed, usually a few minutes later and never more than one hour after the confirmation; your dashboard shows the status, then the IP address once the server is ready | Usually minutes |
| Price | Ironatoll: $63.68 to $406.37 per 30 days. Entry-tier market median: $180.00 | Lower entry price, since you pay for a slice |
| Remote console | Ironatoll: none included | Usually a web console in the host's panel |

## What is the difference between a dedicated server and a VPS?

A dedicated server is a whole physical machine. A VPS is a virtual machine that shares a physical machine with other customers.

On a VPS host, a hypervisor splits each server's cores, memory and disks into slices. Each customer gets one slice and sees it as a computer. On a dedicated server there is no slice: your system runs on the hardware itself. Hosts also call it a bare metal server.

**A dedicated server is a whole physical machine rented to one customer; a VPS is one slice of a machine shared with other customers.**

## Is the CPU shared on a VPS?

Yes, on most VPS plans. Your virtual CPUs run on physical cores that other virtual machines also use, and the hypervisor gives each one turns.

When neighbours are busy, your virtual CPU waits. Linux reports that wait as steal time: the "st" value in `top`. Some hosts sell dedicated vCPU plans that reserve cores, so read the plan's wording.

On a dedicated server, the scheduler only shares the CPU between your own programs. Every CPU core, all the RAM and every disk of the server are yours alone: nothing is shared with another customer.

## What are noisy neighbours on a VPS?

Noisy neighbours are other customers on the same physical server whose load slows yours down. They compete with you for CPU time, disk reads and writes, memory bandwidth and the network port.

The symptom is uneven speed. The same job runs fast at night and slower at peak hours, and you cannot see why from inside your VPS.

A dedicated server has no neighbours on the machine. The datacenter's network beyond your port is still shared with others, as on any host.

**On a dedicated server, the only programs that can slow your server down are your own.**

## Does a dedicated server have more RAM and faster disks than a VPS?

A dedicated server gives you all its installed RAM and its own physical disks. On a VPS, RAM is a fixed share, and the disk is usually a virtual file on storage that other guests also use.

Ironatoll plans run from 16 GB of RAM on Atoll 16 to 256 GB on Atoll 256. Disks go from 2 × 480 GB SSD to 2 × 3.84 TB NVMe. On plans with two disks, the system is installed on software RAID 1 (mirrored) unless you ask support for RAID 0 or separate disks before the server is ready.

Whole disks matter for databases, blockchain nodes and storage. Nobody else's writes sit in the same queue as yours.

## How long does a dedicated server take to set up compared with a VPS?

A VPS usually starts in minutes, because creating a virtual machine is a software task. A dedicated server takes longer: a real machine has to be assigned, installed and checked.

**According to Ironatoll's check of 30 October 2026, the median setup time promised by bare-metal sellers was 24 hours (range: 30 minutes to 10 business days).**

At Ironatoll: A person on our team gets your server ready once your payment is confirmed, usually a few minutes later and never more than one hour after the confirmation; your dashboard shows the status, then the IP address once the server is ready. No setup fee: you pay only the price of the term you choose, at your order as at every renewal.

## How much more does a dedicated server cost than a VPS?

A dedicated server costs more to start, because you rent a whole machine instead of a slice. Compare it with a VPS of the same cores, RAM and disk, not with the cheapest VPS.

Ironatoll prices: Atoll 16 $63.68, Atoll 32 $72.15, Atoll 64 $72.62, Atoll 128 $205.27, Atoll 256 $406.37 per 30 days. Atoll 64 costs 25% less than its named reference, Zomro at $96.84 a month on 30 October 2026.

## Who needs a dedicated server?

You need a dedicated server when your load is heavy, steady or sensitive to neighbours:

- **Many virtual machines:** install Proxmox VE and split the machine yourself. See [how do I install Proxmox on a dedicated server](https://ironatoll.com/install-proxmox-on-dedicated-server/ "Proxmox VE on a rented dedicated server, step by step").
- **Tor relays with high traffic:** Tor exit relays may run on our servers, and so may middle relays and bridges. See [can I run a Tor exit relay on a dedicated server](https://ironatoll.com/tor-exit-relay-dedicated-server/ "Exit relay on a rented dedicated server, step by step").
- **Game servers for a community:** a stable tick rate needs cores nobody else uses. See [can I host game servers on a rented dedicated server](https://ironatoll.com/dedicated-server-for-game-servers/ "Game servers on a rented dedicated server").
- **Full blockchain nodes and databases:** large disks and steady disk speed.
- **Language models on CPU:** they need a lot of RAM and memory bandwidth.

## Who is better off with a VPS?

A VPS is the better choice when a slice is enough or when you need what a classic dedicated server does not offer:

- **Small loads:** a personal site, a test machine, a VPN for a few devices. Compare on [should I use a dedicated server for my own VPN](https://ironatoll.com/dedicated-server-for-vpn/ "Self-hosted VPN on a dedicated server or a VPS").
- **Servers created and destroyed through an API:** Ironatoll has a person prepare each machine, within the hour.
- **Windows:** Linux only: Debian, Ubuntu, AlmaLinux, Rocky Linux, and Proxmox VE to run your own virtual machines. No Windows.
- **A console in a browser:** No remote console (IPMI or KVM over IP) is included: reboots and reinstalls are requested from your dashboard and done by the team.
- **Backups by the host:** There are no automatic backups, so every file you need to keep should also live somewhere you control.

Ironatoll rents whole machines only; it does not sell VPS.

## Can I run my own VPS on a dedicated server?

Yes. Install Proxmox VE, one of the systems offered, and create as many virtual machines and containers as the hardware holds.

Plan the addresses first. Every server has one dedicated IPv4 address and an IPv6 /64. The port speed and the monthly traffic are listed with each plan; traffic counts outgoing data per 30-day period, and over the quota there is never an automatic extra charge. Your virtual machines can share the IPv4 address through NAT and take their own addresses from the IPv6 /64.

## Which dedicated server plan do I need?

| Plan | Quantity | 30 days | 3 months | 6 months | 1 year |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Atoll 16 | 6 cores · 16 GB RAM | $63.68 | $171.93 (−10%) | $305.66 (−20%) | $534.91 (−30%) |
| Atoll 32 | 6 cores · 32 GB RAM | $72.15 | $194.80 (−10%) | $346.32 (−20%) | $606.06 (−30%) |
| Atoll 64 | 8 cores · 64 GB RAM | $72.62 | $196.07 (−10%) | $348.57 (−20%) | $610 (−30%) |
| Atoll 128 | 16 cores · 128 GB RAM | $205.27 | $554.22 (−10%) | $985.29 (−20%) | $1,724.26 (−30%) |
| Atoll 256 | 24 cores · 256 GB RAM | $406.37 | $1,097.19 (−10%) | $1,950.57 (−20%) | $3,413.50 (−30%) |

In every plan: Whole machine · Root access · RAID 1 on two disks · Dedicated IPv4 · No logs · No KYC

**Before you pay**

- Minimum top-up $1. Top up once in crypto, then buy any plan from your balance.
- Credit on your balance does not expire and renews any of your servers. When a top-up is only made to reach the minimum, the unspent part comes back on request within 30 days of payment, in USDT or USDC. The rest of a balance is not paid out unless the law requires it.
- Credited once your payment is checked on the blockchain. Typical network confirmation time: BTC ≈ 20 min · USDT TRC-20 ≈ 1 min · USDT ERC-20 ≈ 5 min · USDC ERC-20 ≈ 5 min · ETH ≈ 5 min · SOL ≈ 1 min · LTC ≈ 15 min · XMR ≈ 20 min

## Dedicated server vs VPS: FAQ

### Is a dedicated server faster than a VPS?

With the same hardware, yes: no hypervisor and no neighbours take a share. A large VPS can still beat a small, old dedicated server, so compare cores, RAM and disks.

### Is a VPS enough for a website?

For most small and medium sites, yes. Move to a dedicated server when traffic, database size or steady CPU load outgrow your VPS.

### VPS or dedicated server for Minecraft?

A small group plays fine on a VPS with reserved cores. A busy server with mods needs fast cores that nobody else uses, which is a dedicated server.

### Can I move from a VPS to a dedicated server later?

Yes. Copy your data and configuration to the new machine, then point your DNS to its IP address. Ironatoll gives one IPv4 address per server, so the address changes.

### Can I pay for a dedicated server with crypto and no KYC?

Yes, at Ironatoll. No KYC: no ID, selfie, documents, card or phone number are ever collected. You top up a balance with BTC, USDT, USDC, ETH, SOL, LTC, XMR and pay for 30 days, 3 months, 6 months or 12 months at a time.

**Rent a whole machine** Offshore dedicated servers from $63.68 per 30 days, root over SSH. No KYC: no ID, no selfie, no documents. Pay in crypto.
